iPhone Xs Max - The good, the bad and the ugly A much short
iPhone Xs Max - The good, the bad and the ugly
A much short lived experience with the new iPhone Xs Max from Apple and here is what I felt about the device. Please do note, few of these might be applicable only to users in India.
Got an iPhone X last year in early 2018 and sold it just after 2 weeks as I didn’t really like the device much, fast forward to the next release and I was quite excited to get the new iPhone Xs Max hoping that things might have got much better but sadly a few got better and few remained the same and few became terrible!
Camera - One of the most disappointing points with the iPhone X last year was the camera. I mean, it’s good but definitely not the extent of what iPhones were capable of in the pervious years. After getting to see how miserable the low light performance of iPhone X was I had to move on to a different device.
For me, the very point of spending a fortune on a mobile phone is because of the camera experience it offers and nothing else. If it were not about the camera then I would be happy even with a device that costs 1/10th or 1/5th of what the flagship iPhones cost.
Fast forward to the iPhone Xs Max camera experience. I was amazed to see how well even the day time pics are captured on this device, you won’t realise until you actually use one and see the pics. There is a huge improvement in terms of the portrait pics captured by the rear camera too and again, you won’t realise it that easy. Try capturing a portrait pic and mess with the stage light effects etc to see how better the edge detection is on the new cameras.
The smart HDR does wonders. There were many scenarios that I would avoid by default when the background lighting is too bright as there is no point of trying to capture a subject with bright background light but the smart HDR is just magical and I realised it only after a few accidental shots.
Coming to the low light photos, it’s a huge jump forward comparing to the iPhone X and even the likes of Pixel 2XL, though the pixel performs better. I was happy that Apple was able to leap forward when it comes to the camera.
Then comes the night shot feature announced by Google. I initially assumed it to be a gimmick that would barely be pushed out to the actual devices but the beta version of Google Camera app out for Pixel 3, 2 and 1 series shows that it’s a feature that actually works and works amazingly well! The new iPhones suddenly feel a few generations behind when it comes to low light photography.
Going forward it highly critical for Apple to form a much better team when it comes to computational photography. I will talk about these points a bit later.
That’s it. Sadly, the only major bump I have noticed as a regular and average user over a very short period is the camera experience.
Siri shortcuts - it’s a blessing in disguise for a terrible terrible personal assistant. We all know how terrible Siri is compared to Google’s assistant or Amazon’s Alexa but the shortcuts features help you store procedures that can implemented and implemented very well to recognise the user’s voice and implement a set of predefined actions. Luckily this works flawlessly and actually helps us put Siri to some good use for once.
App store - being back to iOS after 8 months I love the new layout and how it helps explore more great apps. Apple is grouping a certain set of apps by function or feature and keeps changing these lists often on home screen. Even till date the quality app base on iOS feels lot better than Android, just love the apps on iOS.
The ecosystem - Apple know how to build products that work in tandem and there is no doubt about it! The way Apple Watch or Macbook or iPhone or Airpods work seamless communicating with each other is brilliant and such a strong ecosystem is yet to be seen on any other brand apart from Xiaomi. Yes, hate me all you want for comparing Apple with Xiaomi but the smart home devices from Xiaomi at a throw away price brings the ecosystem to any user and a hardcore user in India will know how it feels like to use them.
Siri - hey siri! When will you actually get any better? Being someone totally used to google’s assistant over the past 8 months on the Pixel 2XL and Alexa on an echo dot over the past 1 month I am disappointed that Apple is barely able to improve the experience of Siri’s understanding.
There is still no conversational abilities for follow up questions
There is still no improvement to catch the Indian accents. Lot terrible compared to Google’s Assistant and Alexa
No deep app integration. You can’t ask Siri to send a Whatsapp message to a contact etc.
Don’t know why but the dictation feature in browsers and apps is terrible and just doesn’t recognise what I speak where as invoking siri from home screen is able to recognise whatever I speak. May be a bug for now.
Camera - Front camera. Unsure what shit they are up to but the pics captured from the front camera are plain miserable! Be it the portrait shots or the normal shots. I don’t use the front camera too often and iPhone Xs Max made me use it even less. A huge improvement needed here.
Maps - Super lol! Imagine having a phone that costs INR 125000 (USD1700) that has a default maps application that doesn’t work. Yeah, welcome to Apple’s definition of modern age. Will they ever have the guts to accept how terrible Apple Maps is and allow users to set Google Maps as a default application for maps? Ever?
FaceID - though I love it in a few ways I still feel it’s doesn’t work as seamlessly as TouchID overall. I still miss touchID.
A quick stop at a traffic signal, I have to check new work related messages. I usually use my left hand to unlock phone using touchID and have a quick glimpse but FaceID forces me to take the phone in front of my face. It feels like violating the traffic rules to do such a thing even when at a traffic signal. A very personal situation may be
Wake up lazily in the morning with my face still half ploughed into the pillow and boom, faceID doesn’t work
The normal using position - phone a bit low near the body and face bent down. FaceID doesn’t work half of the times.
Have a large window behind my bed giving in natural light through the window an on to my bed. When I sit on the bed with the window behind me FaceID doesn’t work most times until I switch on the tube light. It’s failing against the sunlight!
Few core apps and features - last year I had difficulty to sync keychain passwords on my new iPhone X after logging in using my iCloud ID and it was no different this year. Why you do this Apple? I see many such nitty gritty features that users have to struggle to figure out and I really hope Apple fixes these. Called their technical support in Bangalore, India, and they were plain hopeless!
Cross platform compatibility - I see it's lot easier to use non-Apple devices with iPhones than to use Apple devices on non-Apple devices. I can't really blame Apple for this, they want to keep users to stay in their ecosystem but of late I am finding it to be a bane for using iOS. Again, a very personal reason and might not applicable to most as people hardly change phones as frequently as I do.
Now for the bashing
5w power brick - a serious facepalm moment. I still don’t understand why they do it. I understand that a fast charger degrades battery live over a long period and iPhones users are people who stick to their phone for a longer period so they need longitivtiy of every bit of hardware in the phone. But what I don’t understand is why Apple isnt even bundling a 10w or a 12w charger that is still safe on the battery life on a longer run. Terrible!
Screen - at first, it was magical to see a 6.5” screen on a form factor similar to the previous plus sized devices and I was absolutely in love with the screen. A few hours later I realised that the screen shows purple/pink/blue hues at even a minor shift of 10 degrees view angle.
Digging in deep, I understand that (no official source) that the Xs Max has panels being sourced from LG as well as Samsung. As expected, the LG panels are plagued with this issue and Apple is least bothered about it. They neither acknowledge the issue nor is planning on fixing it. People who don’t believe me on this, do comment in this thread, will be more than happy to share all relevant links.
Service support - Apple was the go to company to trust when it comes to customer support but of late it’s been changing in India at least. I have faced it personally, have seen other fellow users face it and discuss with me about it.
They are least bothered to help and are least bothered to take responsibility.
The general stuff
We have reached a point where the hardware improvements are either stagnating or reaching a stage where the changes make not much difference on a real time usage experience. I know how advanced A12 is compared to A11 but how many of you actually feel the difference while using iPhone Xs compared to X? So how does the faster processor matter until is some AR app which is the only instance in which I felt having A12 processor mattered.
It will all be about how good the software teams are in terms of improving the experience via processing.
Siri Vs Google’s AI - I am just no one compared to the brilliant minds at both these companies but what I feel is that Apple’s core team is just too inexperienced compared to the one at Google. I can find no other reason why Siri is so far being Google’s AI even though Siri was released earlier than Google’s AI.
Camera - the same goes with camera. The camera hardware reached a stage where all the companies have access to the same sensors and lens right now and it’s all about how well the RAW data is processed. This is where computational photography comes into place and Apple and Google will be competing going ahead.
This year Apple nailed it when it comes to Smart HDR and Google nailed it when it comes to Night Sight for low light pics. If I were to choose one I would frankly prefer Apple’s smart HDR. I mean, I hardly ever find a real and useful instance where I need to capture a pic in low light that’s useful to me while on the other hand I find plenty of instances where I need a better HDR processing for the pics as I capture daytime pics more. But going ahead I am just not sure if Apple can match up to what Google will have in store for better photography.
Will keep editing to make any changes and add/delete any points in the future. Happy to help and answer any questions you have.
PS: I didn't even proof read the content I typed yet so kindly pardon any mistakes that creeped in.
Every point written is what most of appe users agree upon...thanks for penning it down...
I am sure it is an eye opener for many of us...y to spend that 1-1.25L INR on phones which has no USP left...competitions r much much more better at half the cost....
Updated points on

just a frank simple question..if not iphone , what are u buying if budget was not n issue(which i know is not anyway for u
True words were never spoken Raghu. I personally found the color tinge in a piece in Apple store, albeit the display blew me away. I personally look only for camera and Music playing capability of a phone. As of now, Apple scores ONLY in the music department.
I'd have brought a dedicated music player like Fiio or Sony, but did not want to carry two things together. LG sounds good. Which model?
can't give a general reply to this question as it totally depends on your usage pattern. It's a great and well balanced device but you need to decide if it fits in your needs. It didn't fit in my requirements so I had to move on but that's me.
Half of complaints, I agree.. well written, other half i cant as I am not a xmax user,.. With these kinds of Ux i m receiving from latest iphones, most probably my 6splus would be my last iPhone.. already started using a mi phone , to get some first time hands on android..
, i m having very least expensive mi phone, i can buy 2 of them if i cashify my iphone now.. still i like what it offers for that price, screen equally good as my iphone, and touch response is at-least twice faster than iphone.. when it comes to OS, I need to keep cleaning my RAM, thats one frustration.. games i play in iphone streamlessly, lags sometime thats failure #2.. otherwise for general use of movie, calls, browsing, photos, especially lowlight, whatsapp, FB and insta, were all exceeds my expectation and bit superior to 3 year old iphone tech.. now i m back to my iphone as i miss my watch series 2.. i am looking for a good android smart watch before i make a permanent shift to android..
12 Reasons why this current Android user will return to iOS
12 Reasons why this current Android user will return to iOS thanks to the iPhone XR:
1. Price, for a guy who doesn't want to have phone payments, and will pay the full price up front, $799 for the white 128gb XR is down to earth. If not for that lower price point I wouldn't be writing this.
2. Reliability and Smoothness, if I'm completely honest none of the 5 Android phones(Note7, Note5, Moto Z Play, Note8 and Pixel 2) I've used over the last 2 years were as consistantly reliable and smooth as iOS. The Pixel 2 is close but no cigar.
3. Speed, the A12 Bionic chip is gonna blow Snapdragon out of the water.
4. iMessage, most of my family AND friends own iPhones.
5. Great Battery Life, the XR will have the best battery life EVER in an iPhone.
6. Longevity, the XR will stay updated, fast, smooth and secure with iOS updates for 4 or 5 years.
7. 6.1" 828p display, perfect size screen with a resolution that, as usual, Apple will make look alot better than it's PPI would indicate.
8. Wireless Charging, nice to have.
9. IP67 water resistant, a must.
10. Great wide stereo sound, another must.
11. Great camera, as long as it's as good as my current Pixel 2 it won't get any complaints from me.
12. Great video recording on rear AND front, this'll be nice.
Thank you Apple for putting out a product that has most of the great hardware of the $1000+ phones in a package that is attainable for the working man, husband and father of 4.
Personal preferences Champ and if someone is willing to buy the XR,he/she surely must have the thinking different from the Anti-Apple squad whom have only thing to bash:ppi of iPhone 4 in XR.
It’s a human tendency that they’ll overlook thousands of pros in a thing and will only focus on the cons.
Its look ugly and i will not buy a phone 800 dollar with a LCD display, iphone xr is shit, i just leave apple product,
Man, there are alot of haters on an iPhone group, smh
Go ahead and name a phone less than $800 that will be as reliable, fast, have great battery life, has a 6" screen, will continue to receive OS updates for 4 or 5 years and will run on Verizon(the strongest and most reliable network).
ikr you cant even see the difference on Apples display when it comes to low res display. Somehow Apple manages to make a low res display look beautiful. Now that says alot about a company!
iPhone should work on pricing strategy and little bit provide customization access....just like in jailbreak....just a suggestion ....
Did you know I have 2 iPhones which I currently use! 1. IPho
Did you know I have 2 iPhones which I currently use!
1. IPhone XR as my main iPhone.
2. iPhone 6 as my backup or music playing iPhone.
So the iPhone XR was released in 2018 and the iPhone 6 was released in 2014 so that means they are 4 years apart!
Well, to be perfectly honest in my humble opinion without being sentimental, of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also by looking into this matter in distinct perspective and without condemning anyone's view and by trying to make it objectified and by considering each and everyone's valid opinion I honestly believe that I vividly don't have anything to say. Thank you.
I have two phones too, 13 mini and 13 promax. they are about the same age
mini is 1 month older than promax.
Do you know .. i have 3 iPhones and another one on the way .. an ipad a macbook airpods .. but again no one gives a fuck and neither do i
My brother recently upgraded to an iPhone 6 from a flip phone. I consider this a positive move for a tech challenged 70 year old.
Did you know I had Mexican food for dinner and my enchiladas were delicious. But my beans were salty!
This is the most savage comment thread.
I need that soy sauce more than he does. He has two iPhones. I only have one
iPhone 11pro battery % , exactly after 2 years .. how about
iPhone 11pro battery % , exactly after 2 years .. how about urs ?
Still at 100% with my 12 Pro after 12 months. It really depends on how you charge your phone. Apple has this feature called "Optimized Battery Charging" however I tend to wake up several times in the middle of the night for no reason and every time I'll pick up my phone. As a result, the phone is confused and doesn't know when to stop charging/when to charge the last 20%, as my "pickups" happen practically every hour of the day if you look over a long enough period of time.
My advice: Don't charge overnight (again, I'm familiar with Optimized Battery Charging but in my case, it doesn't do much to help) the phone charges quickly enough that you should be able to get almost a full charge if you charge when you wake up. Stop charging at 80% unless you're hiking or whatever and need every last bit of power (personally, I would rather bring a battery pack and charge on the go). I also very rarely allow my phone to go below 20%, something I read at one point, but I'm not sure if this is just a myth or an old thing from previous technologies or if it's really important.
it isn’t for “over charging “ which is bad but rather how long it spends being fully charged. It takes a lot for your phone to recharge for that last 20% that’s why Apple’s optimized battery charging waits until right before you wake up to charge the last 20%, so your phone doesn’t spend too long in that state
u wont let ur phone at the charger all day , that optimzed battery charging is useless never turned it on in my life and the last 20% take alot of time to charge but also gave u alot of using time
Try next time to charge your battery at 40% until 92% and your battery wont age that quickly + use original Apple charger and not wireless .
Battery charging rule due to long service life. charge up to 80-85%, discharge up to 35-40%.
My iPhone 3 yer, battery life 92%.
My se2 is almost a year old and tbh i dont care about the battery health. I use my phone as i like and if the battery is starting to get issues ill be replacing.
The latest one doesent drain battery that much gaming is no problem too but I recommend you use 14.8 if you have 85% battery health left standby until good 14.8 is better I use iOS 15.0.1 cuz of 100% battery
I've had my Xr for over 3 years and the battery health is 97%. I think this is a very inaccurate number and we should all just ignore it and base any decision to replace on performance and battery life after a day of use.
I had an iphone 7 plus and used it almost daily and my battery health was 87% what's going on with new iphones and their shitty batteries
This is why you don't always leave your phone plugged in. Also stop charging when you don't need to.
my 6s is mostly 100% 95% of the time and my new battery has been 100% for a year and a half so far it’s mostly when you drop below 20% then charge it batteries like to be charged they are made to be decharged and charged that doesn’t mean they like to be fully anyway
After 1 year and 2 months my battery health is degraded to 9
After 1 year and 2 months my battery health is degraded to 93%. In last two months battery health has been reduced from 95 to 93%. It is so strange. Just I have completed 205 charge cycle so I do not understand the maths. According to apple it suppose to be completed 500 charge cycle to replace the battery. So what is you battery health and duration of your iPhone ?
500 cycles (roughly 2 years) is designed to retain about 80% battery capacity. That means it loses about 20% after 500 cycles.
So 200 cycles is 40% of 500 which is the same as 8% out of 20%.
So with 200 cycles that works out at 92%.
Of course battery capacity never degrades at an exact rate, but 90% after 1 year or 250 cycles would be normal.
By the way Apple don’t say you have to replace the battery after 500 cycles.
The phone may work totally fine even after 500 cycles.
Don’t worry too much about these numbers, just use your phone, and if it gets to a point where the phones performance is affected, it will notify you that you should change your battery. But that won’t automatically happen at 500 cycles or 80% battery health. It can happen at 70% or even lower.
but apple needs to change the battery health percentage instead of showing percentage to suppose to show normal or replace
Replacing battery is recommended arround 1000 cycles. After condition 80% and less u have status about battery Service
The cycle depends how you use the battery.
1. Never charge above 80
2. Never discharge below 20
3. Never use the phone while charging and so on.
And secondly I don’t know why iPhone users cry like a baby when their battery health deteriorates. Dude and you even count the battery charge cycle? You have way more free time!
I know that stuff that to maintain battery health you need to charge between 20 to 80 percentage. And to count charge cycle it does not take your whole day it hardly take one minute. Your iPhone records the charge cycle may be you do not know how to check battery cycle in your iPhone. iPhone users do not cry they research about the bug and find the battery Soluation for the iPhone. Android os has lots of bug and android can not beat the performance of iPhone even if you used iPhone more than 3 years it will not lag but android after 6 months it will lag. I have android phones as well.
Being an iPhone user since 2014, I don’t care what my charge cycle is, I do follow the tips but never see the battery health, also being completely unbiased, Pixel beats iPhone in almost every aspect like for like. And last iPhones do also come with some bugs after major OS updates.
Guys relax about the damn battery healt, when you go under the 80% healt, you damn buy a new battery for 10$/€/£ and you crazy guys are ready to go for another 2 years
