HDD or SSD failed -- not even listed in boot devices. Hopefully your info is backed up.

If its anything like my W541 running windows 10, you have to make sure your bios boots up UEFI first🤗

the w520 has uefi support but its not enabled by default, likely it runs a legacy install. Doesnt matter tho, it doesnt even see the harddrive/ssd, so theres an issue with the drive

should I change the hardrive?

its worth a try, id say put an ssd in if ure currently running a hard drive, use the occasion to upgrade

still need hdd for backup archives as ssd limit lifetime

not more limited than your hdd. In daily tasks an ssd will vastly outlive a hdd, especially in portable use like in a laptop.

oh yes much more limited lifetime of storage as it has limited number of writes and storage life so the more you use it the shorter time it has. I have hdd from over 25 years still accessible but ssd maybe 5-10 years max

Ssd Works great like ram etc for daily browsing, apps etc just not for backup storage

thats mainly because you dont own any ssds that are older than 5-10 years lol. Ssds are better in active usecases than hdds for most consumers, thats a fact. Its not great for backups but to be fair hdds arent either. Again, even with limited reads and writes an ssd will far outlast a hdd, as they have an hour based limited lifetime too, ssds dont, they are r/w cycle limited, so if u barely ever read and write, only power up, itll last you basically forever

the warrenty that comes with new ssd state replacement time is under 10 years maybe 5 under heavy use

Look what big server companies use for their long term storage

yeah if it doesn't see your ssd or hdd it won't boot. try going to check if you can still «see» drives on gparted using a liveUSB.

Had same thing on one of my W500 when hard drive was shut down couple times from power outage. Replaced hdd and laptop worked. But saved old hdd incase can restore or save files as not all were backed up. I still use my T61 and W500 units looking for a W520, W701 as latest work stations. How you like the W520?

Try disabling Intel VMD onto Bios
