Hi Peeps. Ok so my wife and I each have a Lenovo E550 thinkpad that I bought a few years ago off a training institution that was closing down. They are both great machines but have Windows 8 in them. I was trying to upgrade to Windows 10 as support for W8 is about to disappear. Obviously the training institution had a licence for W8 and had it loaded on their hundreds on laptops but I am having trouble updating to W10, it just says "installation failed". Does this mean I can't upgrade online and need to buy two copies please anyone?

It has always been a free upgrade from win 7 and later to win 10.

Google how to find your win 8 license #. Get the Win 10 media creation tool and create a bootable USB for a clean install. Enter your win 8 license # during install.

If this doesn’t work there are many sources for win 10 license’s. My last two I got off eBay for $10 ea.

thank you

Check in your bios for a software license number. If it is there, win 10 should install with no problems. Do as Donald said, download from MS and make a USB installer should work without problems.

thank you as well

Just run the Windows 10 upgrade you are good to go, machine will have a Windows key embedded in the bios SLIC will activate and license just fine

I tried that, went all the way through the process and got the final message "installation failed". Tried it 3 times with the same result mate so got a bit stuck really

you could look at the cbs/setuperr log files….or take the opportunity to upgrade to an SSD and do a fresh install
