Are Thunderbolt 3 equipped Thinkpads worth it? I saw a similarly priced L14 with a 10th gen i5 over a P50 with a skylake i7. They’re priced over a little over $500 locally at facebook marketplace. I’m about to enter college soon and will need to replace my aging L540 that should’ve been replaced a year ago since I’m interested on learning AI and stuff

Are they worth it? Depends entirely on whether you need it or not.

Well for AI kind of thing, rather than compatibility. It’s still complicated. A DIY TB3 EGPU is feasible. A RTX 2060 is a good card for deep learning. It’s just the battle between i5 10210u vs a i7 6820HQ

TB3 will benefit you most when using a TB3 docking station and external displays with high resolution / refresh rate or real time video capture / streaming devices.

I’ll go with a P Series. I’ve seen a P Series (P51) goes for $550 locally. Sucks that it was sold so fast. I still have time to save more

P series. i have a T14 Gen1 with the i5 10210U and a P52 Xeon, the thermal headroom is way better for the P52 than the U series chip even they are both quad cores. i get more out of my P52 in heavy tasks plus the color calibration is nice add-on and the quadro GPU. just be sure to flash the thunderbolt firmware as these are known issues

I’v known the issues since most long term reviews for the P50 says it but lenovo quickly released a patch for it as they say
