I have a t440p but the original WiFi doesn't support on 5 GHz. I want to replace but I know t440pd have a whitelist at the bios level. I read that the it I downgrade to BIOS version 2.36 the whitelist is gone and I can use any WiFi cards. Is this correct? Can anyone confirm?

The downgrade does not work. You have to flash the BIOS with an SPI Programmer to get rid of the whitelist.

If you don't need USB ports or don't use many of them, wouldn't it be easier to get a usb wifi dongle? there is a TP-Link one the size of a muse receptor and has 5ghz support.

thanks. Yes, that's something I'm considering

There's 5GHz whitelisted wifi cards

yes, thanks. The problem is I live in New Zealand and I couldn't find them locally. So, I would need to order them online and they would take about a month to get here
