T480 shutting itself down…can’t figure out why

just bought a T480 from Marketplace. did a clean install of Windows 10 and checked the hard drive and everything looks good.

however, twice now, when awakening from Sleep mode and starting to browse the internet it will just shut down.

very odd. any thoughts as to what it could be?

would it be smart to exchange for a different unit?

Runs too hot, that's why it shuts down itself. CPU temp should not be peaking at 97 degrees on normal usage scenario

that’s what I figured. Any reason it would be running so hot? The fans seem to be working.

Dried up thermal paste and or blocked-up heatsink fins

Needs new thermal paste and the old thermal paste removed with an alcohol wipe. The fans might also need cleaning out or a complete replacement of the heatsink/fans. The 8550U is a power efficient less power consumptive CPU that can't really handle temperatures above 50 degrees so it shuts the laptop down to prevent internal damage

Could be something to do with 97⁰ on one of the cores

It’s definitely running hotter than it should - can replace the heat sink paste and see if any change - also check the windows events for any other info on why it may heck shot down

50 centigrade, m series operating temps, not u series, better check cooling system.

Run UEFI hardware diagnostics. If it crashes as well, clean the heatsink and repaste. If not, it's probably the windows install

I'm not able to rise any temperature over 62° C.

My system:

is this at all helpful?

Try usung throttlestop.

Disable your boost temporarily then undervolt with small value until you reach a stable state with desired temp.

Then turn boost on and increase in small increments. Decrease undervolt value if it becomes unstable.
