Is getting a docking station for the T480 worth the price tag? they are not cheap but having more USB ports would be nice to have.

i have one for my T480. It is the 40AC thunderbolt 3 dock. I like it mainly for single-cable connection as i regularly take my laptop with me to my University.

I have an extra monitor, gigabit ethernet, a mouse all connected to the dock. and I use the always-on usb port as a charger for my Galaxy watch. This setup works great, and also charger the laptop att full 65w (when using the dock with its original 135w power supply). I did not think that I need the dock but after using it, I do not see a way to use my laptop without it.

To buy one counting the listed price, shipping and customs fees I'm looking at around $150 CAD without keys and with keys I'm looking at up to $170 CAD. OUCH but are these really worth that price tag? I don't know how much these are even worth used

40AC dock does not use any keys. it uses a cable

What do you need out of the doc? The one I have DK1633, they can be had for a few bucks these days. It charges my T25 over USB-C, adds a few USB ports, ethernet, and displayport ports. Main issue is how many displays you want to drive and what resolutions, because there are limits to what these things support.

I'm looking at the 40AJ dock just so expensive by the time I pay for shipping and customs fees I'm just waiting to got it cheaper if I can if not I will have to pass on buying it I'm not able to pay well over $100 total I can't afford it

When I bought my T480 I was lucky that I found a new 40 AJ dock on marketplace for $70. I am glad I bought it. I am a bit nervous about the only charging option being that single usb-c port and letting the dock handle the connection is a good thing IMHO. I also have the mechanical style docks for a couple of other thinkpads, I personally think they are a great way to manage charging and expansion.

I have some spare compatible docking stations. Can ship to CA as well.

Be cheaper to just buy a USB hub if that's all you'd really need it for...?

I already have one but if I plug in a external hard drive or any other drive that uses a lot of power it makes the wireless mouse not work right forcing me to plug these drives right into the laptop same with a external Blu-Ray drive

I have 5 of the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docks and HIGHLY recommend them. I use them with 3 different brands of computers (Lenovo, Dell, Apple) to drive monitors, Ethernet, and other USB devices. It's a nice way to connect a lot of things to the computer and use one cable. I have workstation areas around the house that are super easy to plug into.

They're readily available (gen 1 and gen 2) on Ebay for around $100 used. If you do get one, make sure it has a real Thunderbolt 3 cable included as well as a power adapter of at least 135w, although 170W or 230W is better.

Lenovo ThinkPad 40AJ Ultra Docking Station? What gen is this version? the listing is saying this supports ThinkPad's from 2018 and newer.

This is what I'm referring to:

The T480 has a Thunderbolt 3 port. I recommend a more generic "brick" style rather than one designed to physically fit a machine into it. The machine ones tend to be quite limited to what models will fit, and likely won't fit your next computer.

The "external box" will work with any machine that has Thunderbolt 3. I use mine with jy THinkPads, but also my work Dell and my MacBook Pro. I even use one with a desktop machine now and then.

Also, Gen 1 or Gen 2 are both fine and have nearly identical features. I think the video output jacks are a bit different between then as well as port layout.

The listing shows the T480 as supported by this dock

The Ultra Docking Station will work fine with a T480 if they say it's compatible. I'm just showing a different form factor for a docking solution that is more flexible and a bit more future proof.

Compatible With: ThinkPad A485, L480, L580, P52s, T480, T480s, T580, , X280 X1 Carbon. Since I don't plan on buying a new laptop anytime soon I don't care if I can't use this dock with another brand or newer model that's not listed.

sounds like that's what you need then. And it'll probably be less expensive than the T-bolt 3 docks. I don't buy much on eBay, but my Thinkpad docks are one thing I do. Always good deals.

Should I care if I have the keys or not? most don't have keys and are cheaper

Not unless you have a need to lock the machine in place on the dock. No keys just means you can't lock it, but does not affect functionality in any way. It has to be unlocked to remove the machine, so no worries on getting on without keys.

It's $20-$30 cheaper without the keys maybe even as high as $40 cheaper with some listings, seems like having keys makes the seller jack up the listing price for keys that are only worth a few dollars lol

I sued to use that style dock, and frequently had keys. Never used 'em. So they're worth $0 to me. >:)

Even more of a rip off to spend more just for the keys😂

It depens how you utilize that docking and your thinkpad setup.
I used 2 extra monitor to extend my display and, 2 hdd external for storage, also mouse and keyboard wireless and peripheral with usb conection. For me its worth it to buy docking station.
If you only used for external hdd, i think its better if just use USB hub with good quality or external power. Its more cheaper than docking station.

Better get thunderbolt dock as others have commented as they only takes one thunderbolt cable to connect. This makes it compatible with many laptops, not just certain Thinkpads.

The 40AJ is side mounted using somewhat proprietary connector. It would deprecate faster.

Adam Grant find a USB dock that takes external power. I would look at USB-C docks, and add a C to A adapter.

It depends on your usecase, work provided me with a tb4 workstation dock for my T15g gen2 effectively turning it into a full desktop setup
