I'm thinking of importing this from Japan, as they're sold pretty cheap due to JPY devaluation.

In case you wonder what's the relationship of this with ThinkPad - it's basically X260 under NEC brand, only has no trackpoint.

No TrackPoint = Not a ThinkPad.

Check my previous post.

I saw it. Still not a ThinkPad. This TrackPoint doesn't work.

How to explain the motherboard design is 100% identical to X260?

It can't be identical, otherwise the TrackPoint would work when you plug the ThinkPad keyboard to it.

To activate trackpoint, simply add a FPC socket and flash EC program from X260. Normally flashing BIOS for other laptops will brick, but this one has proved that flashing BIOS from X260 has no problem at all, only the NEC splash screen will be replaced into Lenovo splash screen.

Why not just get a X260?

2-3 times more expensive than this with same spec, that's why.

indeed, haha

Feel free to search ThinkPad X260 and NEC VK23 on Yahoo Auctions Japan.

Why would anyone want a Nec ThinkPad that isn't a ThinkPad? What kind of service would you get from Nec?

Would you buy a Mac made by Acer?

You probably don't know, but NEC PC department is already adopted by Lenovo few years ago. Lenovo reused most of existing ThinkPad, ThinkCentre and ThinkStation designs and rebranded them as NEC VersaPro, Mate.
But did Acer adopted Apple computer department?

Which will also explain why you can find Lenovo logo printing on PCB inside of recent NEC laptops and desktop PCs.

I know all about that. But what is the point you're making? Get a cheaper ThinkPad that isn't a ThinkPad but it's made by a company that is owned by the company that makes ThinkPad?

Acer and Apple haven't worked together yet, but Acer made some IBM ThinkPads back in the day that were horrible.

I already have too many ThinkPads in black, and I want another one in different color, but I still need the typing experience ThinkPads provided. Most of NEC VersaPro and Mate PCs are almost in white or silver color, but similar design to ThinkPad and ThinkCentre remains.

I know NEC laptops (before USB-PD charging port is commonly used) are unable to use docking station, but even a proper X260 isn't going to be my daily driver anyway. My daily driver is a T495 and a M75q-2.

Which is why I beg the question. But you do you. Nec isn't a disreputable company and they make a lot of great stuff, so try it out.

Pretty expensive on ebay, around 750USD...

And yahoo auction japan not available anymore from EU. So bad.

in this case you should search on proxy service like buyee or zenmarket instead.

This is a good chance to purchase something from Japan since the exchange rate is good, I also just bought a T470s in Yahoo auction, it cost around USD120 including the shipping

I saw your post and some article before, this NEC laptop just like ‘brother in law’ with Thinkpad X260. They are also made by same factory and same hardware.

If you want to import laptop from japan. Better go for panasonic let's note. I guarantee It's better than NEC and ThinkPad. Japanese also consider panasonic laptop is the top.
